Van Gogh insisted always on painting from life, and loved to paint en plein air. He did not want idealized versions of places and people: he found beauty in the individual, the specific, and even the flawed. These three are not hothouse sunflowers, but flowers from my Seattle garden, in all of their quirkiness and beauty. Unlike the other still lifes, which are painted as cut flowers in formal interiors, these three Sunflowers are living, growing plants out under the summer sun.
